CHANGING YOUR LEGAL NAME

The family law attorneys at The Guerra Law Firm can help you legally change your name.  The Texas name change procedure for an adult includes filing a petition with the Court and sending the applicant's fingerprint card to the local law enforcement agency for a criminal background check.  The court will grant the legal name change for an adult if he or she has no felony charges.  A name change certificate will be issued to be sent to actually change the legal name on social security records, driver's license, and other records.  The legal name change will not relieve a person of any debts or obligations that were in the former name.

If you are seeking a name change for a child, notice of the petition must be sent to the child's other parent, so that parent will have an opportunity to contest the name change.  In these cases, the Court will normally hold a hearing to determine if the change of name is in the child's best interest.
